Hickeys, seemingly harmless and common in romantic relationships, can conceal a deadly danger. In extremely rare but medically documented cases, these amorous kisses have caused death by triggering fatal strokes. One notable case occurred in Mexico when a 17-year-old boy died after his girlfriend gave him a hickey on the neck, resulting in a blood clot that traveled to his brain. This phenomenon occurs when sucking puts pressure on the carotid arteries in the neck, causing damage to their walls and potentially generating clots that can block blood flow to the brain. Although extraordinarily rare, even minor events such as sneezing or racing cars can also trigger this condition. The severity is especially increased in people with certain preexisting medical conditions, such as connective tissue disorders.
